  23. That's the problem!  Christians can't agree on jesus' teachings, and
  24. therefore can't agree on what Jesus would condemn.  If they could
  25. agree, then they wouldn't have spent all that time killing and
  26. torturing each other for not being good christians.  Thankfully,
  27. secular law prevents that today, but they still claim that those other
  28. people aren't "real" christians.

  38. Ah, but we _have_ a firm definition of what a duck is to start with,
  39. from which you have generalized a test for duckness.  We can express
  40. this definition in two ways.  First, by enumeration:

  45. Family      Anatadae
  46. Subfamilies Dendrocygnae  (whistling ducks)
  47.             Anatinae      (mallard, teal, marsh ducks)
  48.             Aythyinae     (diving, sea, bay ducks)
  49.             Oxyurinae     (stiff-tailed ducks)
  50.             Merginae      (mergansers)

  52. Second, there is a set of anatomical features (which I won't list)
  53. that is used to determine membership in this phylum, class, order,
  54. family, subfamily system.  This definition of what's a duck is pretty
  55. much universally agreed upon by ornithologists and can be used to
  56. decide if a bird is or isn't a duck, regardless of the opinion of the
  57. bird in question.

  59. Your generalized test for "duckness" fails in several respects. All
  60. birds, even non-ducks, lay eggs like a duck.  Most waterfowl (even
  61. non-ducks like loons, geese, and swans) have large, webbed feet
  62. positioned towards the rear of the body. This is an efficient
  63. arrangement for swimming, but on land it's a little clumsy and makes
  64. them "walk like a duck."  Some of these non-ducks even make noises
  65. similar to those made by some ducks.  The whistling or tree ducks, on
  66. the other hand, can walk with ease on land, and as you might judge
  67. from their name, don't quack.

  69. And at least as significant: when I say "the ducks on the pond behind
  70. my house are annoying because they make a lot of noise early in the
  71. morning and wake me up," people don't respond with: "those aren't
  72. _real_ ducks, they just claim to be ducks."

  79. Then the operational definition of christianity seems to become "that
  80. which produces good fruits."

  82. So, somebody who is kind, generous, etc. is now a christian?  That
  83. will be a shock to a lot of buddhists, muslims, hindus, wiccans,
  84. shamanists, samaritans (you remember that one don't you?  And yes,
  85. there are still a few samaritans around), jainists, pantheists,
  86. naturalists, humanists, and so on.  Some of the kindest, gentlest,
  87. most generous people I know are devout atheists.

  89. How can you judge a tree by its fruits, when you can't get people to
  90. agree on what's a tree and what isn't?  Every time I try to judge
  91. christianity by its fruits, there are always claims that the "bad"
  92. fruits didn't come from "real" christians.  But, there is never any
  93. claim that any of the "good" fruits don't come from "real" christians.

  95. Christians seem to spend a great deal of time acusing each other of
  96. not being christians.  Who should I believe?  Father MacGuiness told
  97. me that roman catholicism was the "one _true_ religion," and others
  98. are on some kind of scale of christianity with RC at 1.0,
  99. anglicans/episcopalians (COE) and lutherans next, with your
  100. presbyterians, methodists, baptists, etc. a bit further down the
  101. scale, and COJCLDS (Mormans), Muslims, Jews, and everybody else at 0
  102. (not christians).

  104. The non-christian, abrahamic/monotheistic religions (Judaism and
  105. Islam) didn't seem to rank any higher on the ol' christ-o-meter than
  106. atheistic, pantheistic, or polytheistic beliefs. But, I got the
  107. distinct impression that the other abrahamic religions were still
  108. somehow better that the rest.  Maybe Dante was right and there are
  109. various circles of hell, and Jews are damned to the first circle,
  110. Muslims to the second, and people like me to the seventh.

  112. It is one of my major accomplishments that I sat through ten or
  113. fifteen hours of CFA (Catholic Faith for Adults) classes in a
  114. conservative rural Minnesota parish and kept my mouth shut the whole
  115. time.  Trying to have a rational discussion about religion with those
  116. people would have been similar to trying to teach a mule to read --
  117. you don't accomplish anything, and it annoys the mule.  [my aplogies
  118. to whomever I stole that line from -- it sounds like Will Rogers, but
  119. that's just a guess]

  121. Of course, I was later told by another catholic that what Father
  122. MacGuiness said wasn't necessarily the official position of the roman
  123. catholic church.  Hell, you can't even count on an RC priest for the
  124. straight RC version of the story.  Apparently F. MacGuiness had
  125. invented some kind of fuzzy-logic "isChristian" predicate whose
  126. implementation hadn't been verified by the official source code review
  127. panel.

  129. I've also heard evangelicals say that they seriously doubted that the
  130. pope was a christian.

  132. Since we can't get christians to agree on who's a christian, we move
  133. on to the fruit judging event (Yow! Just like the county fair!).

  135. One christian group is trying to force their religion into the science
  136. classes in my school district.  Fortunately, only one of the five
  137. members of the school board has had enough of his brain sucked out to
  138. fall for this.  Who knows what will happen after the next local
  139. elections.  The christians vowed to "keep fighting the battle until we
  140. win."

  142. Despite all the bullshit about organized satanistic abuse, the only
  143. documented cases of organized religious child abuse are in christian
  144. groups who think they have to "beat the devil out" of children.
  145.  
  146. Local christian groups are constantly trying to ban books -- they just
  147. got _The_Lords_of_Discipline_ banned from the curriculum in a local
  148. district.
  149.  
  150. Another group fire-bombed one local clinic and assaulted the staff and
  151. patients at another clinic in the name of christ.  Lambs seem to have
  152. become violent since the times when as a child I used to help bottle
  153. feed orphaned lambs on my grandparent's farm.

  155. One christian sect makes their children handle poisonous snakes to
  156. prove their faith -- and some of them get bitten and die.
  157.  
  158. At the last U.S. republican national convention, Pat Buchannon
  159. declared a "holy war" on me and people like me.  And don't try to tell
  160. me that "family values" isn't doublespeak for white, conservative and
  161. christian.
  162.  
  163. Christian scientists have allowed children to die of easily treated
  164. medical conditions.
  165.  
  166. Thousands (if not millions) of people have been tortured and killed in
  167. the service of christianity.  Even the thousand-year old conflict
  168. between the celts and the anglo-saxons is now reported as a conflict
  169. between protestants and catholics.

  171. Of course, none of these things are consistent with "real"
  172. christianity.

  174. People have accused me of being hostile towards christianity, but how
  175. am I supposed to react when christian groups declare a holy war on me
  176. and talk about fighting battles against me until they win (and I
  177. lose)?
