  11.    Hidden away in Mr. Mazankowski's economy measures of Dec. 4th was the
  12. decision to freeze the budget of the Medical Research Council for the next two
  13. years, reneging on the much-touted previous commitment to provide 4% increases
  14. for the next 4 years. Many wrote to Minister Winegard thanking him for securing
  15. these increases, so it may now be appropriate to express our dismay at this
  16. betrayal. The sum which will be saved will be $65 million out of a total budget
  17. reduction of $4.253 billion (i.e. 1.5%), but the impact on medical research in
  18. Canada will be immense.

  20.     Canadians are encouraged to write to their Member of Parliament, the
  21. Hon. William C. Winegard (Minister of Science) and other appropriate MPs
  22.  
  23.     Note that the next election will be in 1993.
