- I too have been diagnosed with ADD - residual type. That is, I was a
- hyperactive child and have residual symptoms. I've also undergone
- treatment for depression in the past, and indeed they are two different
- afflictions. I started out with depression-symptoms, a few years ago,
- and that was successfully treated with psychotherapy and imipramine.
-
- The ADD diagnosis came later after the psychiatrists couldn't
- pigeon-hole my complaints. I've been taking Ritalin (10mg BID) for over
- a year now, and I do find that my thoughts are much less flighty. I ha
- had a problem with being distracted by all sorts of things to the point
- of never accomplishing what I set out to do. Like I'd sit down at a
- terminal to read the news and I'd get distracted by the TV or the radio
- and time out before I'd logged off. (Worse things happened...)
-
- The worst part was I'd never finish anything. I'd get things going and
- in the middle start something else. Which itself would never get
- finished. Now this can -complicate- depression. Lack of "stickability"
- anc complicate lack of motivation due to depression. But, I've found
- that they are two different things.
-
- Even with the Ritalin, I've found that I have to accept that I see tasks
- differenly from others. That I see life as an endless stream of things
- to occupy myself with that I have to choose from. Doing so, I've been
- able to reduce my need for Ritalin. BUT -- without it, it's so easy to
- get sidetracked into something "trivial" like organizing my sock drawer
- while I'm waiting for a screen update online...
