- In the context of the Swiss militia, I believe that most planning
- presumes that they will continue to hold their national fortress in
- the core of the Alps no matter what. Given a relatively secure area
- of retreat and resupply and the widespread idea that those Alps are
- hollowed out and stuffed with war materials, could go a long way toward
- aleviating the problem of supply. During the American Revolution, even
- though the British troops were superior in most respects, there were
- places that they could never penetrate due to a strong militia (e.g.
- central Connecticut). These formed the supply base for Washington's
- army, and made a war of attrition unwinable.
