- YES THERE IS an AP round for the 30mm GAU-8A cannon. It is a depleted urainium
- tipped projectile, especially made to penetrate armor plating (that's what AP
- means, isn't it?). Keep in mind that the 30mm amunition used for the A-10 cannot
- be used by the chain gun on the Apache. I thought that there were two types
- of amunition available for the Apache's gun, one being an exploding round, and
- the other an AP Sabot (I'll have to look this up in my library at home to be sure).
-
- You are correct however in mentioning that the 30mm rounds are most effective
- against the top, and rear armor on tanks, and so it's use as a ground based
- tank-killer is limited. However a ground based variant could deal very well
- with AVFs other than tanks, and be used as an AAA weapon.
