- I worte the initial post about the compostion of the Marine Expeditionary
- Unit (MEU). At all times the Marine Corps keeps several MEUs afloat; one in
- the Med. area, one in the west Pacific and now, sometimes in the Persian
- Gulf. The MEU was the initial force on the scene. A MEU is built around
- a reinforced infantry battalion as the ground combat element. The GCE
- will have LAI, Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs), and Artillery. I
- am fairly sure that no M1A1s are in a MEU.
-
- As follow on forces to the MEU a Marine Expeditionary Brigade was deployed.
- This Brigade used Maritime Prepostioned Shipping (MPS) form Diego Garcia
- for its equipment. A MEB is built around a reinforced infantry regiment.
- They would normally have tanks. I say normally because the organization
- of Marine Air Ground Task Forces (MAGTF) are not fixed and can be tailored
- to fit the mission. In the case of MPS, the Marines fly from their base
- (in this case from California) and marry up with their equipment. This
- shortens considerably the time it takes to deploy a large MEB but it
- also means that the MEB is more generic, able to meet a variety of missions.
- For the worst case senario, the MEB is supposed to be able to conduct 30
- days of combat after they unload the MPS squadron. All the supplies
- the need are on the MPS ships. At least for 30 days.
