- As early as 1945 wartime experience dictated protected ready rooms in
- addition to a new arrangement of side armor, and more deck-edge elevators.
-
- In the modernization of the Essex class carrier, three ready rooms were
- relocated from the gallery deck to protected positions below the hangar
- deck. Since the pilots would have to climb some considerable distance
- from below hangar deck to the flight deck (remember that pilots wore
- aviator suits, life vests, parachute, etc.), the escalator was installed
- outboard of the island structure (on the starboard side).
