- I saw the same special. The main medical expert, and one of the investigators
- in the twin study, was E. Fuller Torrey at NIMH. He is very well known for
- his work in this area.
-
- Both MRI and PET scans were used in the twin study. MRI usually showed
- frontal lobe atrophy; PET more often showed low frontal lobe activity,
- and lower cerebral activity generally, if I remember correctly.
-
- The thing that sticks in my mind from the special was the main male patient,
- who lived in NYC. After the show was finished, but before I saw it, he
- apparently suffered some exacerbation of his symptoms and sought help; a
- friend helped him apply to some clinics. Unfortunately, he was not admitted
- immediately; a few days later his body was found in the East River, the
- implication being made that he had committed suicide. This was related in a
- postscript to the special. Coming after I had spent an hour being shown this
- man's life, and having come to care for him to a considerable extent, it was
- a great shock.
