- My father was a heavy smoker for most of his life. Even when he was
- lying in bed dying of lung cancer he said he would smoke a cigarette right
- then if he could. It wouldn't have mattered, but there was no smoking allowed
- around the oxygen tanks because of the fire hazard, and he *really* needed the
- oxygen.
- I don't know the details of how lung cancer kills you, but one of the
- effects in my father's case was fluid build-up in the chest cavity. Every few
- hours the doctor (maybe the nurse, I don't recall) would have to come in and
- draw off about a liter or so of pink-ish liquid. The Old Man would be pretty
- uncomfortable just prior to this procedure. He'd gasp like the wind had been
- knocked out him, trying to get his breath, but I guess his lungs could not
- expand against the pressure of the liquid. It was kind of like watching
- someone drown over a period of hours. The doctors finally did some procedure
- that arrested the fluid build-up, but a month later -- doped up, but still in
- continuous agony -- he died. The Old Man was kind of a John Wayne type, and it
- was amazing to me how quickly he wasted away. As an aside, I have to say I
- think of this period when I hear the discussions about Dr. Kavorkian and his
- machine.
-
- So, if you are looking for an image to concentrate on, try imagining
- you are slowly drowning in your own juices. If you've ever had the wind
- knocked out of you that is probably the right feeling.
- I'd also suggest, however, that you spend some time thinking about
- (imagining) your lungs recovering and becoming more healthy each moment you are
- not smoking. A little positive imagery cannot hurt, and -- my opinion -- is
- better than the negative thoughts. Of course, one of the benefits of thinking
- about these things is that it keeps you from thinking about the things you like
- about smoking.
-
- For what it's worth, I smoked for nearly 20 years. Got up to a pack
- and a half a day, more when I went out the "the boys". During that time I quit
- smoking at least a dozen times. Finally succeeded. It ain't easy, but I
- highly recommend it. Whatever works, do it.
-
- Good luck,
- tony
