  17. Pathologic intoxication is a rare syndrome involving a history of
  18. sudden confusion, disorientation, and violently beligerent behavior
  19. after relatively small amounts of alcohol (e.g, < 4 oz).  There is
  20. usually amnesia for the episode.  Behavior during pathologic
  21. intoxication has been said to have an automatic quality and some
  22. authorities have suspected or hypothesized a relation to partial
  23. complex (psychomotor) seizures. This latter seems doubtful imho.
  24. Patients I have seen with pathologic intoxication have generally had
  25. some underlying cerebral impairment (e.g., a history of severe head
  26. trauma, longstanding drug/alcohol abuse).  Pathologic intoxication is
  27. not the same thing as psychosis.  A rare syndrome but it does exist.
