- Pathologic intoxication is a rare syndrome involving a history of
- sudden confusion, disorientation, and violently beligerent behavior
- after relatively small amounts of alcohol (e.g, < 4 oz). There is
- usually amnesia for the episode. Behavior during pathologic
- intoxication has been said to have an automatic quality and some
- authorities have suspected or hypothesized a relation to partial
- complex (psychomotor) seizures. This latter seems doubtful imho.
- Patients I have seen with pathologic intoxication have generally had
- some underlying cerebral impairment (e.g., a history of severe head
- trauma, longstanding drug/alcohol abuse). Pathologic intoxication is
- not the same thing as psychosis. A rare syndrome but it does exist.
