- That reminds me the time that I asked my 3-year-old daughter how many legs
- we have in our family. She couldn't answer until my wife came out of the
- shower! (3 years later this is still a family joke). Actually, I am
- constantly surprised about my daughter's (now 6) capacity for abstraction.
- The other day while I was lying down, she wanted to play noughts and
- crosses (tic-tac-toe). Instead of opening my eyes, I suggested we play by
- grid references (A1, B2, C3 etc.). She has learned the concept of grid
- references before, but what really surprised me was that she was clearly
- quite able to play the game without any visual aid!
- Unfortunately, I am not a math teacher, but this incident taught me an
- excellent way to test kids for their grasp of grid co-ordinates!
