- Note that the popular phrase "life, liberty and property" was changed by
- Jefferson to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Both
- Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin believed that private propert was the
- creation of the state and subject to the will of the state. They
- were impressed with the Iroquois concept of land usage. Of course,
- their opinion were not the majority at the time.
