  16. A century or so a fellow by the name of Watts had a nonlinear control problem 
  17. where he was employed to turn a steam valve on and off repeatedly.  Being 
  18. naturally lazy, he invented a leverage sysytem for the machine to do it for 
  19. itself.  He was then credited for inventing the steam engine.  I rather suspect
  20. he went through an evolution process where he needed at times too much memory 
  21. and too much space.   We seem to have compressed those requirments in 
  22. intervening centuries...
