- Maybe you could just measure the road horsepower rather than believe
- Portch propaganda. Here's the drill. Drive at 70 mph on level ground.
- Push the clutch and hit neutral. When the car hits 65 mph, start a
- stopwatch. When it hits 55 mph, stop the stopwatch. You now have the
- beginning and ending speed and how long it took to change. Given the
- car's weight, you can calculate how much energy was lost in the process
- of decellerating. I'll let you figure out the math. It's Physics 101
- stuff.
-
- Hint: Cars I've measured require road horsepower in the range of about
- 12 to 25 hp @ 60 mph. Since the Portch rolling wedge is far from
- aerodynamic and uses gumball tires, I'd certainly not expect a figure
- near the low end.
-
- BTW, I liked your comment about having blind faith in the engineers who are
- designing flywheel batteries. Reckon you could help bring some of that
- to my field, nuclear energy?
