  11. Dues for both the Panama and Suez canals are based on tonnages assigned to
  12. ships by the canal authority.
  13. The tonnages are roughly equivalent to the gross tonnages, ie. a measurement
  14. of volume rather than displacement. Any book on ship construction should 
  15. carry an adequate explanation. Try Ship Construction by Taylor from Butter-
  16. worths.
