- Not to detract from what has previously been said, I would like to
- offer two comments regarding evolution of intelligence. I saw
- an interesting hypothesis put forward recently which suggested that
- primate intelligence is primarily social intelligence that serves
- to facilitate predicting what other individuals will do. (The person
- who suggested this used gorillas as an example of a species that,
- on the face of it, doesn't seem to need a lot of intelligence -- until
- the social component of their environment is considered.) I've also
- seen the intelligence of porpoises and dolphins cast in similar light.
- Sorry I don't have a good reference for this stuff. I would also like
- to suggest _Braindance_, by Dean Falk as a good primer on current thought
- regarding hominid evolution (and also an interesting perspective on
- science as it is practiced).
