- Greetings to all,
-
- I think that perhaps this would be a good time for
- someone, in this case me, to put in $0.02 from the
- the non-christian side of this argument.
-
- I, personally, do not identify myself with the 'New
- Age' movement, however I am not christian and do tend
- to appropriate concepts from religions and philosophies
- that pre-date or are otherwise outside of christianity.
-
- The 'New Age' movement and religions that it spawned are
- not monolithic. There are also other religions that have
- become more easily visible in this century that tend to get,
- mistakenly, lumped in with the 'New Age' conglomeration.
-
- One of the problems that I have seen in the 'New Age'
- community is that of appropriation of Native beliefs
- without complete understanding. There have also been people
- who have mixed a large quantity of fiction in with native
- religions and then tried to sell the mess to people who
- don't know any better, and in so doing desecrate the native
- religions that they purport to espouse.
-
- As far as the Neo-Pagan community and the organizations
- that are decendant of Masonic traditions go (I do not presume
- to speak for these either, but I do have more information
- on them) most of the people that I have seen in these try to
- hold the utmost respect for those cultures and belief systems
- that they have integrated beliefs from into thier system. Also
- some people in these systems have a right to the beliefs that
- they are tring to recreate from the past, since they are
- members of that society in question. i.e. persons of Western
- European decent attempting to reconstruct the pre-Roman
- religious practices of the region.
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- If you do not wish to read any more on the Christian vs.
- Other debate type 'n' now. ;}
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Many of the 'New Age' groups simply do not consider
- Christianity to be any different from other monotheistic
- religions, and so those people are seen as attacking
- Christianity due to a lack of respect for 'the one true way'.
-
- Yes, some people from all three of these groups have
- participated in Christian bashing ... however, much if that
- is caused (but not excused) by the fact that many
- Christians do not respect others' beliefs and try to force
- people to belive in Christ.
-
- I too would like to know how those peoples who have shared
- their beliefs with newcomers feel about it. I do also wish that
- the well meant, but rather uneccessarily vehement discussion
- of Christianity would please find a more appropriate place
- to be discussed.
