  40. I've replied to Victoria privately regarding the above comments.
  41. Regarding what specific religious principles our Constitution is
  42. based upon, and therefore our culture, the Deists did believe
  43. that the judeo-christian Ten Commandments were good laws upon
  44. which to base our government, but they did not specifically be-
  45. lieve in the deity ("Jehovah God") that prescribed them.  They
  46. may have believed in the theory that the deity somehow wound up
  47. the universe like a clock and just let it run, too (as Bud Hovell
  48. mentioned. I don't remember, but it makes sense.)  The New Age
  49. movement similarly seems to "take the best and leave the rest,"
  50. but not always.
