- Just so you know....YES they can do this but it will be a nightmare:
-
- I did this for my son (a trip on 10 days notice) and I waited 2 hours
- to spend 5 minutes with an agent to simply get an appointment for another day.
- he said to come before appointment time for faster service. Then on
- appointment day, I come early to get told to wait until the appointment
- time. I then waited 2 more hours (after the 'appointed' time) for a 10 minute
- certification process to have them process. Then I waited another hour just
- to pick it up. All this was on 3 separate days, three separate trips to the
- passport office. It seemed faster if you went early morning of the day
- before departure (they do try to shortcut it somewhat for those folks).
- Check what they give you BEFORE you leave the agent - many employees made
- stupid and careless errors on the passports.
-
- The hired help was largely rude, arrogant and obnoxious to the point of
- insult. They also gave conflicting advice and often made terrible errors,
- i.e. wrong name or birthdate on the new passport. BTW, I speak of those in
- the NYC office in Rockefeller office.
-
- My SO called the passport office in Paterson NJ and they demanded she bring
- my son's drivers license even though she repeatedly said he was only 10
- years old.
-
- If at all possible, do it by mail - you'll thank your lucky stars.
-
- If you must go in person, bring PLENTY of documentation, bring $100 or so
- in cold cash, bring 2 clear identical photos of the individual (they must
- be a certain size etc), bring reading material or a walkman (to while away
- the hours) and bring a chair - there is no place to sit while you spend
- many hours on line. Call ahead to get the forms you need to bring BEFORE
- you go. Those forms have all the instructions you need to know BEFORE you go.
-
- Grrrr....our government at work...
