- ---------------------------
- I was there two weeks ago for a week. I did extensive reading about
- the Caribbean before picking St. Martin. Also, I talked extensively
- to several long time residents about the island.
-
- Some first and second hand information (of varying accuracy):
-
- 1) We felt completely safe, everywhere, driving and walking around the island.
- However, we did not go off driving or walking in remote areas after dark.
- That's just common sense, not because we were warned not to. It appears to be
- safe to walk aroud the cities (Phillipsburg and Marigot) and the touristy
- areas after dark. Many people, including many tourists, were doing just that.
-
- 2) Crime is on the rise in St. Martin, particularly theft of and
- from cars. The Avis representative insisted that we use a locking
- club on the steering wheel of our rental car when we parked it overnight.
-
- 3) Crime is supposedly worse on the Dutch side. We stayed and spent
- 90% of our time on the French side (much nicer, IMHO), but the car was
- rented on the Dutch side.
-
- 4) St. Martin is very wealthy by Caribbean standards. The crime rate
- is lower than on most other heavily populated Caribbean islands. There
- is little of the abject poverty that exists on many other islands, and
- that I have myself witnessed in many places in Jamaica. In any event,
- the violent crime rate in St. Martin is miniscule compared with that in NYC,
- where you are posting from.
-
- 5) The relative wealth of St. Martin, and the availability of jobs, has
- brought a recent influx of illegal immigrants. On the French side, many
- are from Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On the Dutch side most are from
- poorer islands in the English speaking Caribbean. The illegal immigrants
- are not legally eligible for the generous social services available to
- legal residents (subsidized by French taxpayers on the French side). This
- may have something to do with the rising crime rate (speculation on my
- part here).
-
- 6) The local police crack down real hard on crime, especially attacks
- on tourists, which I believe are rare.
-
- 7) Go and have fun. It's not completely safe, but it's safer than most
- other touristy destinations.
