- An alternative to the YMCA and the new IYH on Amsterdam Avenue is The
- International House, a graduate dormitory run by a private foundation.
- It's on the Upper West Side, right next door to Columbia University
- with easy access to subways (and, I live there).
-
- For short term stays*, the rate is $25/night but the arrangements are
- very spartan but very secure (I don't know if the Vanderbilt or Sloan
- YMCA's are air-conditioned (we're not); that's very important for the
- summer here!). Deluxe rooms are available at ~$60-80/night, with air
- conditioning, cable television and private bathroom. A $50 damage
- deposit (refundable at check-out) is required.
-
- Be sure to specify that you are looking for short-term housing and
- include dates in your request. There are also long-term rates.*
- One added benefit is their Programs Office, which supplies not only
- tourist information but a lot of insider tips and sometimes freebie
- tickets to a few events. Regular year residents are another source
- to find out about the "real" New York.
-
- As for YMCA, I don't think there would be problems with the Vanderbilt
- YMCA on the East Side or with the new Int'l Youth Hostel on Amsterdam
- Avenue.
-
- The address for International House of New York is:
-
- Admissions Office
- International House
- 500 Riverside Drive
- New York, New York
- USA 10027-3916
-
- (212) 316-8436
- FAX: 212-316-1827
-
- (212) 316-8400 (central switchboard)
-
- Oh yeah ... cash or travellers' cheques only. American Express is
- accepted for the deluxe rooms; otherwise ... No credit cards.
-
- * The current rate schedule is:
-
- 1-14 days $25/day
- 15-30 days $18/day
- 1 month $14-$18/day (depending on the room)
