  24. An alternative to the YMCA and the new IYH on Amsterdam Avenue is The
  25. International House, a graduate dormitory run by a private foundation.
  26. It's on the Upper West Side, right next door to Columbia University
  27. with easy access to subways (and, I live there).

  29. For short term stays*, the rate is $25/night but the arrangements are
  30. very spartan but very secure (I don't know if the Vanderbilt or Sloan
  31. YMCA's are air-conditioned (we're not); that's very important for the
  32. summer here!).  Deluxe rooms are available at ~$60-80/night, with air
  33. conditioning, cable television and private bathroom.  A $50 damage
  34. deposit (refundable at check-out) is required.

  36. Be sure to specify that you are looking for short-term housing and
  37. include dates in your request.  There are also long-term rates.*
  38. One added benefit is their Programs Office, which supplies not only
  39. tourist information but a lot of insider tips and sometimes freebie
  40. tickets to a few events.  Regular year residents are another source
  41. to find out about the "real" New York.

  43. As for YMCA, I don't think there would be problems with the Vanderbilt
  44. YMCA on the East Side or with the new Int'l Youth Hostel on Amsterdam
  45. Avenue.
