- I just heard that on Saturday, 12 Dec. Tom Piras was killed. I was
- told that he was putting on an RW seminar down in Panama. At some
- point during a dive, a canopy deployed underneath Tom and knocked
- him unconscious. (The deployment was apparently accidental.) The
- cameraman and another jumper gave chase but were unable to catch him.
- The rumor is that Piras may have come to at ~200 and dumped his reserve
- but obviously too late.
-
- The other jumper is apparently OK. It was a "very inexperienced"
- group of jumpers and I believe that it was an 8-way or so.
-
- I was told that as the plane was climbing to altitude, Piras said something
- along the lines of if there was ever a jump that he should have his
- Cypress turned on, this was it.
