- They're the Powell Bones bearings. Until recently, these were some of the most
- precise bearings available on the marketplace. Most racers have been racing on
- Powells. There are now some specialty bearings being manufactured for racing;
- racers may be moving to these now. Perhaps Rod Murillo could tell us.
-
- The one-sided shield generally isn't a problem. If left on the inside of the
- wheel, there's sort of an implicit shield from the hub. Note: I use one of the
- metal axle systems; this may provide a better seal for the inner side of the
- Powells than the standard guys.
-
- It's fairly difficult to expunge contaminants from a shielded bearing; people
- take off one of the shields to clean their bearings. Since the shields are
- nearly impossible to replace, people just leave them off.
-
- In short, the Powells have already "removed" the shield that most people
- interested in maintaining their bearings would get around to removing anyway.
-
- If you're not interested in maintenance, the Powells may be a poor choice.

- The bearings that speed roller skaters use have no shield on the inside *or*
- the outside. This is different from the Powells, which have a complete shield
- on one side.
