- You basically have two major choices for underwater format, macro and
- wide angle photography. For macro, probabably the most popular lens
- for the Nikon F series bodies is the Nikor 55mm Micro, either the f
- 3.5 or 2.8. I have the 3.5 - wonderful piece of optics. You can
- focus down to 1:2 ratio, so this will be quite close to your subject
- (a few inches in front of the macro port). For wide angle, try to get
- a 20 mm Nikor, second choice being the 24 mm. When using a wide angle
- lens behind a dome port (certainly mandatory for the 20 or 24 mm)
- you'll get better depth of field with the 20 mm, allowing closer-in
- minimum focusing distance (the 24 has approx. 2 ft minimum focus
- distance, quite annoying). I forget if you need to use only AI or AIS
- lens with the F3's normal prism; don't have my Nikon data book here at
- work to check compatibilities (I have an F2).
-
- The Ikelite housing is rated to 165 ft so you should O.K. Much can be
- said about strobes. Having used (and abused) several makes, I've
- gotten to like the Ikelite Substrobe series. Although they do fail,
- Ikelite has the best repair service I've yet found. The Substrobe
- 100/150/225 has a 110 degree angle of coverage, adequate for a 20 mm
- lens. The flashes are TTL compatible, so this should work with the
- F3. UW guide numbers are reasonable, even for the slower transparency
- stock that I like to shoot. Cost / performance seems pretty good too.
- A second smaller strobe (MS or MV) is a excellent addition for macro work.
- The only major negative thing I can say about the Ikelite strobes is
- their arm system; very awkward to use in macro mode.
