- I've seen this advice and anything is worth a try if a shark is comming
- at you. I would doubt this would work on a large shark, however, and the
- Great White very often attacks from below so you probably wouldn't even
- see it coming. Also, many attacks are aimed at the feet and legs presumably
- because they tend to be moving around the most.
-
- The speed of attack also makes defence difficult. As an example here is
- Mike DeGruy's description of the attack in which a Reef shark took off
- the top of his arm. At the time he was photographing a female which was
- in "display swimming" posture. This is a sort of tense posture in which
- the pectoral fins are lowered, the mouth may be open, the head is raised
- and it swims in a very slow, exaggerated manner. If you antagonise Reef
- sharks in this posture attack is extremely likely. This is not a verbatum
- quote but I think it is accurate:
-
- I thought that the posture was a warning but I decided to get
- a picture. As the strobe triggered so did the shark. Before the
- mirror had even fallen back into place so that I could see
- through the lens, the shark had halved the distance between us.
- All I could do was shove out the camera but the shark brushed it
- aside, grabbed my arm and took the top off. Then it just swam
- away in the same posture.
