  16.    I'm interested in making thermite and wanted to ask the
  17. experts about the hazards involved.  The FAQ mentions the
  18. potential respiratory problems posed by exposure to fine
  19. powders such as those used in thermite.  It also warns
  20. of blindness from the extremely bright UV light that's
  21. released.  Of most concern though, is the warning about
  22. spontaneous ignition of Al dust.

  24.    o Are there any preventive measures?
  25.    o Will Al treated with stearic acid be more stable?
  26.    o It sounds as though significant activation energy
  27.      (ie. a sparkler) is usually required.  If the Al
  28.      can spontaneously combust though, can the reaction
  29.      itself proceed spontaneously and rapidly?
  30.    o If not, will the reactants slowly combine and diminish
  31.      in potency?
  32.     
  33.    The FAQ mentions that this is an oxidation/reduction.
  34. Are there two exothermic reactions or one?  Exactly what
  35. is going on here?

  38.    o What are the products and their charges (if any)?
