- Hi,
-
- I'm interested in making thermite and wanted to ask the
- experts about the hazards involved. The FAQ mentions the
- potential respiratory problems posed by exposure to fine
- powders such as those used in thermite. It also warns
- of blindness from the extremely bright UV light that's
- released. Of most concern though, is the warning about
- spontaneous ignition of Al dust.
-
- o Are there any preventive measures?
- o Will Al treated with stearic acid be more stable?
- o It sounds as though significant activation energy
- (ie. a sparkler) is usually required. If the Al
- can spontaneously combust though, can the reaction
- itself proceed spontaneously and rapidly?
- o If not, will the reactants slowly combine and diminish
- in potency?
-
- The FAQ mentions that this is an oxidation/reduction.
- Are there two exothermic reactions or one? Exactly what
- is going on here?
-
- o What are the reactants and their charges?
- o What are the products and their charges (if any)?
-
- Thanks in advance for your advice!
-
- Coughing, blind, and burnt,
-
- Chad.
