- I must have been practicing some other TaeKwonDo for (am I allowed to say
- how many?) years. Too many........
-
- The flamboyant kicking (which I'll concede does exist) is the special talent
- of TaeKwonDo; consequently practictioners like to show it off. Admittedly,
- many of the so-called "new masters" (especially those from the Yudo School
- mafia) only know the Olympic style. But the old guys have a whole range
- of tools in their toolbox, including a whole martial art known as HoShinSool.
-
- If you think TaeKwonDo is impractical for street defense, I encourage you
- to look at
- 1) your own personal commitment to training (i.e. 95% of street
- defense talents results from sweat paid in the gym) That's
- why a well coached high school wrestler (and a lot of junior
- high wrestlers) and most boxers can kick most martial artists
- butt. I'm refering here to TKD people, so I'm goring my own ox.
-
- 2) qualifications of your instructor. If you've spent 6 months
- honestly training and don't feel you can reasonably defend
- yourself, it's time to switch (unless you were in really bad
- shape (or should I say "challenged physically"?) to begin
- with. I trained many a private at Infantry Training School
- (Camp LeJeune, NC) and while they weren't Bruce Lee, they could
- certainly handle most of what typically comes down the pike
- in far less time.
-
- I don't want to upset anyone and I hear what you're saying, but it's
- not TKD's fault-- it's the instructor or the student's own fault.
-
- This is, of course, my humble opinion-- but nothing pisses me off more
- than to hear about students who are making honest effort to learn (any)
- martial art, but aren't being honestly trained by the boss.
