- Karate tournaments use rules, just as judo tournies do. Certain
- techniques are disallowed (i.e. strikes to the groin or throat etc).
- And peopel are expected to have a certain amount of control. Assuming
- the person throwing the punch/kick/whatever has that control, it is
- possible to reverse the blow at the point of contact. Contact is made,
- felt, and (hopefully) seen by the judges. HARD contact is not suposed
- to happen. Certainly it does, but rarely full force.
- I wouldn't call the strikes "painless", but I doubt many judo
- practitioners will claim that getting tossed around, even on your
- mats, is completely painless.
-
- The above is my own experience. Perhaps you know someplace where
- karate tournies do not use saftey rules?
