  11. Before the law changed in Canada, I was interested in
  12. making what would be referred to as "armor piercing"
  13. handgun ammunition.  No unlawful intent was contemplated...

  33. Basically, the "favorite" configuration is a lathe-turned
  34. brass projectile with a pointed conical tip, and a chamfered
  35. base.  Some example weights and performance from Adair article:

  37. 9mm         75g    1868 fps
  38. .45 ACP        125g    1640 fps
  39. .357 Mag         75g    2100 fps
  40. .45 Win Mag    125g    2200 fps

  42. Anyone considering such a project (legally, please) should be a
  43. master reloader and a good machinist.
  44. Matching the bore diameter with the projectile diameter is
  45. critical, unless you like playing with handheld bombs!
  46. One of the tricks used is to make the projectile a little undersize,
  47. to allow for expansion inside the bore due to frictional and
  48. powder heating.  Slightly undersize also reduces the pressures.

  50. Some manufactures put lube grooves in the projectiles and
  51. use special formulation silicone grease to reduce friction.

  53. I believe that the law enforcement only AP pistol ammunition
  54. sold by Winchester/Olin has some of the above general characteristics,
  55. with a friction reducing coating on the projectiles.
  56. (Check out the warehouse/armory scene in "Lethal Weapon III"
  57.  for the manufacture of the so-called "cop killer" "bullets").

  59. By the way, my recollection from my reading is that NO
  60. United States law enforcement personnel have been shot THRU
  61. a vest or "cover" with AP pistol ammo.
