-
- Ray Zee has a new book out that's decent. It's a bit rambling and
- imprecise, but there are some good ideas and concepts.
-
- I've seen software with Omaha-hi, but I don't think there are any
- good programs with the split game. I'm thinking of writing one on
- the side, but the theory on Omaha-split is not that well defined.
-
- I keep changing my mind on the relative values of high-hands versus
- low hands. Sometimes, I convince myself that low hands are better,
- and other times, A-2-x-x doesn't look good to me.
-
- Just looking at some rough calculations (*very* rough), if you start
- with the nut low (A-2):
-
- -You are only going for half the pot (unless you hit a straight
- or flush or some other good high hand.)
-
- -With the nut A-2 and nothing else, there is a good chance of
- getting counterfeited and in Omaha, a pair of aces doesn't cut it.
- Three of the five up-cards have to be 8-or-lower *and* different
- from your two low cards. In other words, you're trying to hit
- 6 values (instead of 8) out of thirteen on three out of five
- cards. The odds are against you here. If you are going for
- half the pot, your expected value is less than 25% of the pot.
-
- -In Omaha, a significant percentage of winning low hands get
- quartered. It would be interesting to determine how often
- this happens. My guess is that it happens more times than
- most people would think.
-
- Unless you hit the straight or flush (and the odds of this can be
- calculated, but it would be harder to calculate the odds of having
- the *high* straight or flush), starting out with the nut low and
- no support will give you an expected value of probably less than
- 20% of the final pot. (Actually, it's probably more if you figure
- in the ability to bail-out after a bad flop and the long-shots of
- lucking into the winning high hand.)
-
- If anyone knows of a book with a good discussion of the theory
- behind omaha-8-or-better, please let me know.
