- Do not worry about your lack of knowledge of English words, you
- made yourself very clearly understood with those words you do know! That
- is better than many people who are native English speakers.
- My mare likes bagels, which are a heavy bread donut. I think the
- yeast in the bread makes it taste very good to horses. However my filly
- does not like bread, though she will eat apples which my mare doesn't like.
- In the case of dog food, I believe it is the soybean meal or the corn meal
- which constitutes the greatest percentage of dry dog food that the causes the
- horse to like to eat it. As for horses eating meat in winter, I think
- when a horse is starving they may eat anything but give them an opportunity
- to eat hay and they generally prefer it unless they have gotten very used
- to meat or there are other flavorings disguising the meat flavor. Also
- my horses are tremendously suspicious of any new or unfamiliar food. They
- are very selective and I have seen them pick a section of moldy hay out of
- their feed bins and throw it away and eat only the good stuff (for the
- record I was horrified that the owner of the stable I was boarding at
- would feed such lousy hay, I immediately removed the bad hay and found
- a good bale and fed them myself with the good hay, AND I complained to
- the owner).
