- As John pointed out in a previous article, to say that Lipizzans are
- descended from Andalusians or that the Spanish Riding School got
- its name from the fact that Andalusians were used is not strictly
- correct.
-
- Spanish horses were used as some of the foundation stock, but
- "Spanish" does not equal "Andalusian". Both Lipizzans and Andalusians
- have ancestors who were bred from Arab, Berber, and Iberian horses.
- Andalusians and Lipizzans were bred for different purposes and
- the breeds diverged early on. In other words, they are cousins
- with some common ancestors, but the one is not the direct descendent
- of the other.
-
- The Lipizzan is also descended from Karst, Kladruber, Danish, and
- Neapolitan horses.
-
- Tracy had asked whether Lipizzans were crossed with Arabs at Babolna
- in Hungary during the early 19th century.
-
- This is the best information I have been able to uncover to date.
- Most of what follows is courtesy of Mary Lightstone of Santa Ynez
- California who helped put together the USLR Studbook and has
- researched Lipizzan pedigrees for many years.
-
- The Napoleanic wars drove the Lipizzans into Hungary but they
- were south of Babolna. Though there may have been Lipizzans at
- Babolna, it was largely an Arab breeding center. Although Hungary
- and Romania are known for cross breeding Lipizzans, Mary was not
- aware of Lipizzans from this era (or area) with Arab sires.
-
- Thanks for all your questions folks! Keeping 'em coming!

- PS On a personal note, we are anxiously awaiting our second purebred
- foal this April. If s/he turns out half as nicely as the first,
- I'll be thrilled!
