  13. John had a question about why the USLR (and others) refer to the
  14. American Lipizzan as Lipizzan instead of Lipizzaner.

  16. In my opinion it may be more appropriate to use Lipizzan (pl. Lipizzans)
  17. when referring to American Lipizzans.  One might want to use Lipizzaner
  18. (German adjectival) when referring to the Austrian or German Lipizzaner
  19. since those are German speaking countries.

  21. The name derives from the little town of Lipizza which is on the border
  22. between Italy and what was formerly Yugoslavia. Archduke Charles
  23. (Hapsburg) founded "The Royal and Imperial Court Stud of Lipizza on
  24. the Karst" in 1580.  In other words the name "Lipizza" is not
  25. originally Germanic, so a German ending is not necessary unless you
  26. are using the word in a Germanic context.

  28. I think it is pefectly appropriate to Anglicise the word since the
  29. American Lipizzan benefits from being descended from Lipizzans from
  30. many European Nations and has been bred here now for a number of
  31. generations.

  33. Having said this, as John pointed out, many use both terms.  The only
  34. real mistake is spelling it Lippizan, instead of Lipizzan as is
  35. sometimes done.
