- Hello all! I've been following the color genetics thread, and now
- I have a genetics question of my own.
-
- I have a friend who has an Arabian mare that she suspects might be
- a CID carrier. She hasn't bred the mare because of this suspicion, and
- I applaud her caution. I thought that I'd recently seen a magazine
- article on CID inheritance and told her I'd get it for her, and for
- the life of me, I can't find it.
-
- So my question is this: can someone explain CID inheritance in
- Arabians to me? My recollection is vague, but this is what I think
- is true. CID is a recessive trait, so that if my friend's mare is
- a carrier, she'd have to be bred to another carrier to produce a
- CID foal, and even then would have a 25% chance of getting a CID
- foal. In that case, there's a 50% chance of getting a carrier and
- a 25% of getting a healthy non-carrier. Is this right?
-
- Does anyone know if CID is more prevalent in some bloodlines than others?
- My friend's worries about her mare are based solely on the death of
- one foal sired by her mare's sire. The cause of that death was
- never determined, to her knowledge. Is there a test to see if a horse
- carries CID?
-
- This mare is terrific and really ought to be bred. Any information
- is certainly appreciated!

- P.S. This machine is giving me trouble, so I hope this posts in
- a fairly coherent way. If it doesn't, I'll try again! ;-)
