- 1-way airfare $55 inter-island instead of $13-15 more; e.g., has a good
- B&B in Hona @ $55-65; will look into what she can find and call us back;

- spoke with Christina 12/9 - this sounds nice!!! She is very nice and
- even said that if we don't want to do the 12 miles at night, she might
- be able to pick us up from the airport!! It sounds like it would be
- good to stay here as a base and do day trips, maybe with two loop
- trips with overnights in Lahaina and Wailea - she's centrally located;
- they have a room with 2 twins avail. @ $80 with 10% off if we stay
- 5 or more nights - avail. for our whole 2 weeks! She said she may
- even bike with us; beautiful area (Ha`iku, SE of Pa`ia), quiet, 1.5

- bike rentals (there's a place just outside airport in Kahul`ui); she's
- a vegetarian and making lacto-veg. breakfast for me no problem; her
- Dad is a retired doctor; used to be a plantation - sounds lovely!!
- She said, by the way, that Ann of All Islands is a "drill sergeant"
- and is tough sounding but nice when you get to know her; also she said
- that Ann can't get better rates than calling B&Bs directly, and that
- Ann doesn't list all B&Bs on island; she also recommended Lahaina
- Guest House B&B for staying overnight in Lahaina (from where we can
- take a boat to Lana`i!)
- (800)621-8942 Lahaina Guest House - called 12/9 and spoke with Tanna;

- at Old Lahaina House (app. $60) and neighbor Tony ($50 but very
- bare accomodations) right on Front St. in downtown Lahaina (Tanna
- is between Lahaina and Kahana so not very busy); call her back if
- we still need a place - and in meantime she's sending her pamphlet
- 667-4663 Old Lahaina House (John & Sherry) called 12/9 - sounds nice!
- Spoke with John; they bought this 6 months ago; can walk all over
- Lahaina from their house; place to store bikes; 5-10 min. bike ride
- to boats to Lana`i and Moloka`i; lots of fruit and baked goods for
- breakfast; has a room w/ 2 twins for all nights I thought we might
- be interested in - e.g., 5-6, 12-13; close to Kapalua airport;
- lots to do in town; veg. dining no problem - e.g., Avalon (w/ herbal
- juice bar and some night live music) and Lah. Coolers (?); he'll
- send me pamphlet and I should call him when I know if we're coming;
- he has a 10-year old boy and a 3-year old girl; old sheepdog; called
- 12/15, hoping to stay 4th and 5th but 4th already booked; reserved

- Called Cruiser Bob's 12/9 and they said that there are two companies that
- do shuttle people up the crater - Trans-Hawaiian and Robert's of Hawaii --
- and also maybe Grayline Tours (but C.B's doesn't; they do rent bikes @ $20)
- According to Robert's of Hawaii, these companies might also do downhills:
- Maui Downhill 871-2155 12/15 - won't ferry us; they have sunrise and day
- trips; from Haiku would have to meet at their office (1/2 hour drive)
- at 4 AM (!) returning at noon or 7:30 AM returning at 2; from Laihana
- they'll pickup at 3:30 or 6:45; 2 meals - continental break. and then
- lunch or brunch; 3.5 hour bike ride down on bikes they build themselves
- with strong brakes and no speeds; $99, sunrise tour $105
- Maui Mountain Cruisers 871-6014
- Hawaiian Bicycle Experience 874-1929
- Tom's Barefoot Catchback Tours 661-8889
- Chris' Bike Adventures 878-2575
- According to Grayline these companies too:
- Mountain Riders 242-9739
- Barefoot Catchback 667-5011 [diff. from Tom's Barefoot?]
- Maui Bike Adventures 669-1169
- Maui Downhill Bicycle 871-2155
-
- Trans-Hawaiian Services (800)533-8765 called 12/15; they don't have service
- to give us a ride one way; they have tours all over incl. to see sunrise
- at Haleakala ($24) and to Hana from Lahaina (like 7 AM returning 6 PM,
- $74 or $62 w/o lunch); sending pamphlet incl. tours on Big Island
- Robert's of Hawaii (800)767-7551 called 12/15; Have a complete Maui island
- tour from airport 8:30 AM for 8.5 hours @ $28.82 (doesn't sound bad) that
- goes down Haleakala, Eyo valley state park, local mall for lunch 1-1.5 hours,
- Lahaina 1-1.5 hours; doesn't think they have service on minivan just
- up Haleakala; sending pamphlet about tours incl. Kona circle tour of Big
- Island; was very helpful in looking up bike places in phone book and
- said would fax those pages of Yellow Pages for Maui!!
-
- Haleakala Downhill (800)
- Graylines of Hawaii (800)367-2420 called 12/9 and gave them my address to
- send a pamphlet - and they asked me to call during business hours (6:30-5)
- 12/15 - $28.52 pickup Lahaina 7:30 return 12:30, or airport 8:15-1:15;
- can't ferry one way; suggested taxi might be cheaper than paying for RT
- bus seat (really?? taxi < $30 for 38 miles?); gave names of bunch of
- companies that do downhill tour on bike

- I read about them in Schwinn's "Cycling & Fitness" magazine - sounds
- fun!! This is in Maui (Hawaii); Bob Kiger had a bike rental business
- which wasn't going well and got idea of vanning people up Mt. Haleakala,
- word's largest volcano, and letting them bike down in 1982 and started
- his company!! 13 riders max per group accompanied by 2 leaders; 38 miles
- done in 8 hours (but his "annual August 15 'Cycle to the Sun' race has
- pitted 200 of the world's strongest riders against the steepest paved
- road on Earth. Going the 'wrong' way, these riders crank up the volcano
- at incredible rates - the record ascent, thus far, is two hours and
- forty-four minutes [by] ... Californian Tom Resh,[who] made the climb
- faster than the average descent"!!); costs $95 and includes use of their
- Schwinn Beach Cruiser bikes with special brakes created by Bob (can't
- use own bike); lunch/breakfast break at Kula Lodge; road is paved but
- narrow - sometimes there are tour buses and cars; sounds fun!!!!!
- [doing the division, record is 14+ mph avg. for 38 miles uphill!!!!!!!!!]
- 12/15/92 - sunrise and day rides; in Pa'ia (10 mins. or biking dist. from
- Haiku); pickup from Lahaina at 3 return at 12:30 or 8:45-4:30; $1/mile
