- You may want to try out a BBE 422 Sonic Maximizer (hate that hokey name).
- It has a similar purpose as the Aphex and Beringer units (I believe Aphex won
- the lawsuit) but achieves it in a different way. As I understand it, instead
- of generating fake harmonics it controls the dynamics (with
- compression/expansion) of the high frequencies (harmonics) based on the
- dynamics of the midrange (fundamentals) - seems reasonable. I have one and
- like it very much. After mixing down from 8-track I use it (sometimes) on the
- stereo mix. Sometimes it seems to have no real effect unless you overdue it
- so I take it out. Other times it makes a world of difference, bringing out
- subtle characteristics of instruments that I couldn't get right just using EQ.
- Anyway I found it well worth the price ($199 at Sam Ash) and think you should
- listen to one if you can. Let us know what you decide to go with and how you
- like it.
