- The German magazine "stereoplay" has tested MD, DCC, DAT, and CC
- against each other. Here's a summary. They like the features and
- ease of use of MD, but find "the sound of MD disappointing". They say
- that a grand piano sounded more like an electric piano, and that MD
- added lots of noise even to digital copies. As an overall rating,
- they ranked it in the same class as standard analog cassette
- recorders, and not on a par with top-of-the line analog machines. In
- the measurements, they found "stronger noise around 3 kHz, and hissing
- encoding error noise around 10kHz," which totally masked the test
- signal above 10kHz. In addition, components above 12kHz had totally
- been dropped by the data reduction algorithm.
-
- DCC, on the other hand, received positive reviews and was found to be
- almost on a par with CD. For their test signal, DCC data reduction
- dropped everything above 10kHz (!), but did not introduce noise below
- 10kHz. stereoplay also noted that DCC is sluggish (around 40 seconds
- to read the table of contents before recording), from personal
- experience it seems it's even slower to skip to the next of previous
- title than analog cassette decks. DATs do all this an order of
- magnitude faster, and they (Aiwa, JVC) are hitting the 700 DM (400$)
- line here in Germany now. stereoplay found the new generation of DATs
- to be of the same reproduction quality as top-notch CD.

- Happy holidays to all netters,
-
- Stefan.
