  10. "Exhumed" is a darkside fiction magazine a co-op writers'
  11. group has started to publish.

  13. First issue was October 1992 and the upcoming issue will be
  14. published late January 1993.

  17. We plan to stay with a print format for three main reasons:
  18.  
  19. 1   So we can include graphic illustrations which add to the
  20.     atmosphere of the fiction
  21.  
  22. 2   To remain accessible to the widest possible audience.
  23.  
  24. 3   "Exhumed" offers
  25.     entertainment primarily, something to read in bed, take
  26.     to the cottage or on a plane flight.
  27.  
  28. Our first issue was complementary and was distributed through
  29. Kingston-area bookstores, at Queen's University and at St. Lawrence
  30. college.

  32. The next issue will have a lot sleeker appearance with a black and
  33. white glossy cover and saddlestiched stapling (i.e. like Time
  34. and Newsweek, staple goes through the fold
  35. on the spine).

  37. Problems we are encountering are mainly (can you guess!) $! $! $!
  38.  
  39. The local periodical distributor advised us that if he distributed
  40. "Exhumed" it would likely get buried at the back of the bottom
  41. row on the magazine racks where it would not attract attention because of
  42. being only black and white.
  43.  
  44. Local bookstores tend to be leery of taking magazines on consignment.
  45. I can see their point of view and know that there will likely be
  46. some pilfering .

  48. We have sold some ads to local businesses.  By issue 3 we will have
  49. #2 to show to advertisers which will give us more credibility.  But
  50. the darkside theme tends to seem either too controversial or too
  51. frivolous for some advertisers.

  54. Has anyone tried any kind of printed self-publishing like this?
  55. Any hints would be welcome.

  57. Any hints on how to locate subscribers would be especially welcome.
  58. Darkside fiction has a huge appeal so we know we have to broaden
  59. our reach geographically.
  60.  
  61. We are also considering offering our editing / critiquing services
  62. (for a modest fee) to beginning writers of darkside fiction.  Any
  63. comments on that one?
