-
- This is the generally right answer.
-
- However, I have seen some complex estates where the executor has
- established an escrow account For Benefit Of the heirs. Since an
- estate can take a year or two or three to close, income generating
- assets of the estate after estimated taxes could be placed into such
- an account.
-
- The executor normally needs to file both an estate tax return
- covering the estate, and also an annual fiduciary income tax
- return (Form 706) for income generated by the the estate while
- it is still open. The latter is filed on a form 1041 and
- resembles a 1040.
-
- But if the heir's tax rate is lower than the estate's, it is
- advantageous to place income-generating assets into an escrow or
- similar account for the benefit of the heirs, and report income
- on a 1099 apportioned to each heir.
-
- So it is possible though unlikely, that you could find the executor
- has filed a form 1099 requiring you to report income earned by
- assets of the estate which have not yet been distributed to you.
-
- This is probably for your benefit however.
