- "The New Colossus", by Emma Lazarus is a sonnet (14-line poem)
- that can be found in many anthologies of American poetry. It was
- written specifically for the Statue. The last 6 lines are quoted
- more often than the whole sonnet, and are:
-
- "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp", cries she
- With silent lips. "Send me your tired, your poor,
- Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
- The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
- Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me.
- I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
