  33. It really is a rip off. I also received one the other day offering to
  34. take care of the SS paper work to change my name (I got married 4 months
  35. ago). Half way thru the rather long letter they do mention that it is
  36. easy to do yourself. I suppose they have to put it in to avoid some sort
  37. of legal recourse.

  39. When I got Jeffreys SS#, I first stopped at city hall to pick up his
  40. birth certificate. Then I went to the SS office, and filled in the forms. 
  41. I think they just looked at the birth certificate. City Hall and SS are
  42. within 3 miles of my house, and the whole process took about 2 hours.
