- In Colorado the legal age that a child can babysit is 13. I believe that
- this age is also the age where children can legally be left alone. My 9
- year old called 911 once (she heard a strange noise). I had taken the 3
- year olds to the store for medicine. I was gone 10 minutes and got home
- just as the sheriff pulled into the driveway. I raced into the house to
- check on the girls. They were fine. The officer asked Kelly (the 9 year
- old) lots of questions (what she heard, where, etc) and investigated with
- her. I was really pleased - he treated her as an adult. When they were
- all done, I sent the kids inside. I was glad that Kelly knew to call
- 911, but if I was going to get a ticket I didn't want the kids to see :-).
-
- The officer was really nice. He said that he was glad the kids knew what
- to do in an emergency and then he left. No ticket. I suspect that he
- saw that I had the little kids with me (ie, I didn't habitually leave
- all the kids home) and he knew that I was going to the drug store (not out
- for something stupid). I was relieved. My husband and I talked about
- the situation. Kelly is very responsible, too responsible as it turns out.
- We decided that Kelly was ok to leave alone for a few minutes at a time
- but that Katie (6 1/2) couldn't stay with her. Kelly worries too much about
- Katie.
-
- Kelly is now staying home before and after school (4th grade). She does OK
- for about 1 1/2 hours and then she gets nervous and bored. I have not left
- her alone for Christmas break. The daycare center was willing to take her.
- She's a big help in the baby room.
-
- Instead of taking 3-4 days off during spring break, could you work a bunch
- of half days? Your daughter would probably be ok at hime all morning if she
- knew that Mom would be home right after lunch. Or, would the mother/father
- of one of her friends be willing to take her a couple of days in exchange for
- you taking their child (maybe for a weekend or something)?
-
- I definately believe that we should slowly teach our children how to stay
- home alone, but all day is a long time.
-
- One last thing - our neighbors down the street NEVER left their daughter
- alone overnight. When she graduated from high school she asked to be allowed
- to stay home alone while her parents were on vacation. Everything was fine
- until she decided to have a *little* party. It turned out to be not so little
- and a parent was hurt when he came to get his son. I plan to teach my children
- how to stay home before they are adults :-)
