- First, an abstract question:
-
- Do you agree that men should stay out of decisions about womens'
- access to abortion because men never get pregnant?
-
- (Transparent, aren't I?) If you agree, then you should be consistent
- and give his perspective special consideration. That aside,
-
- * Whereas I'm very solidly in the anti-anti-circumcision camp,
-
- * Whereas every male in my family is circumcised,
-
- * Whereas I get REALLY worked up when some mouth starts in on
- "genital mutilation,"
-
- * Whereas I get even more worked up when some <person> makes the
- absurd comparison (see elsewhere in this thread) between
- circumcision and the genuine mutilation perpetrated on girls,
-
- Therefore note and convey to all interested parties:
-
- No biggie. If YOU'RE not Jewish (Daddy don't count, and Muslims
- can wait) let the kid be. Sure, there could be problems; if so,
- deal with them as needed. You MIGHT check to see if either
- family has a history of foreskin trouble, but I rather doubt
- that most kinds are hereditary.
-
- All that said, if you BOTH finally decide to circ the kid, get
- someone really competant to do the job. From all I've been
- able to learn, I have real doubts about your random
- OB/ped/podiatrist and their ability to do the job right. Too
- many seem to confuse an MD with divinity. You might see if there
- are any MDs in the neighborhood who are also certified mohelim,
- since by all accounts they really have to be good.
-
- Either way, I'll second the other poster who suggested that you
- watch the procedure. In addition, I'll strongly advise that you
- watch YOUR prospective knifer at his work. Don't assume that if
- you've seen one, you've seen them all. Techniques vary widely.
- Someone who knows what he's doing can get it over so quickly and
- smoothly that the kid doesn't even wake up (really!) (Sort of
- like shots or IVs: some take forever & hurt, some are so quick
- that you miss it if you blink.)
