- There are so many REAL parenting issues. Why do we spend
- time debating over the semantics of saying "We're pregnant"
- (just once I would have loved to have the opportunity
- to say that) or flaming people asking for advice or debating
- over who gets to change the diaper? Some days I wish misc.kids
- looked more like a safe place to get information
- **********************
-
- Well, I think misc.kids *is* a safe place to get information-
- I have been amazed at the support and caring and willingness
- to share resources and information here. And I know there
- are plenty of parents out here (including single moms)
- who share your interests and concerns.
-
- But as the person who started the dialogue (to put it
- politely) on men saying "we're pregnant", allow me
- to explain:
-
- For me, as a feminist and linguist (and person), semantics
- *are* important - more important, I guess, than they are
- to the many people who replied, basically, "chill out".
- Language is what we use to express what we think and feel, and
- I think the words we choose are (often) significant - and
- certainly in this case, for me. And believe me, if the
- phrase had been used in my house, it *would* have been
- a "real parenting issue"! ;)
-
- And I like that I can ask about Isabel's constipation,
- share a cute story, reply to a childcare question, *and*
- participate in discussions that are more "philosophical".
- And if people sometimes post without thinking first, or
- flame unecessarily, well, it happens. In most cases, I
- think people mean well.
-
- (though even I am pretty tired of circumcision discussions!)
