- As an AMD shareholder I am certainly pleased to see an opportunity for
- the company to make some revenue but I don't believe that this will
- hurt Intel in any noticable way. Intel has a huge cash cow in the iAPX
- line and in the semiconductor business that's an advantage of very
- great importance. AMD has no proven ability to tap into that market on
- their own, and it is becoming increasingly certain that they are now
- indeed on their own.
-
- And if Intel were not a formidable enough foe by itself, TI will
- be in the market too via their Cyrix cross license. Intel will take
- the high end of the market via their ability to spend on R&D and
- TI will take the low end via their traditional focus on high
- volume low cost manufacturing.
-
- >I'd take the microprocessor issue as a small part of a bigger picture...
-
- On the contrary, I think it is THE most important issue.
-
- If you subtracted Am386 revenues, AMD would be hurting very badly.
- In fact, if you look at AMD's performance between 1984 and 1991,
- you can see how the company does without a copy of an Intel product
- in their porfolio. Try stock prices < $4.
-
- Well guess what. The 386 market is dying and Intel and TI are doing
- their best to kill it. Intel is also doing their best to keep AMD out.
- The last two (maybe even three) times AMD made huge amounts of money,
- it was based on copying Intel products. The 386 right now, and the 286
- back in 1983/84. In fact, the 286 revenues made AMD so profitable it
- won a spot in some stupid book titled something like "The 100 best
- companies to work for."
-
- (this book was stupid because it gave credit for AMD's success to
- things like a no layoff policy which actually cost AMD dearly later on)
-
- Doing a 586 is a lot different than copying a 386. AMD has a lot of
- smart people but most of them are fab and process type people, which
- is only part of what you need for doing your own 586. Perhaps AMD
- can pull it off, but do they have a track record of doing this
- kind of thing?
