-
- AT&T had 3 troubles with Unix:
- 1. AT&T never made money with it
- 2. AT&T tried to make it proprietary for higher prices
- 3. in the end, AT&T only had emotional reasons to keep it.
-
- The big question I have is why Novell thinks that $350 million
- was a fair price to pay for something that had only about $50
- million in sales. Granted that Novell used new stock offerings
- (ie, fake money) to get it and will soon do a $250 million
- write-off, but, there are only so many accounting tricks that
- can be used to hide the too-high price.
-
- Novell is unlikely to recoup any expenses via new revenue from
- incorporating Unix for at least a 1/2 year. UNIX licensing is
- not much and will decline as BSDI and W/NT grow.
-
- The only long-term benefit Novell will likely gain is a replacement
- for Ray Noorda when he retires in a few years.
