- I've heard lots about savings bonds not being taxable if they are used to fund
- education. I am starting to buy bonds for my nephews and niece in hopes that
- they will someday use them for educational purposes. I have purchased them in
- their names. I'm new to these things and someone just told me that, to gain
- the tax benefits, I should have put them in their parents' names. How
- important is this?
-
- If the bonds are in the parents names and they spend them on their children's
- educations, can they write this off on their taxes? How much? If the bonds
- are in the children's names, must they (the children) write this off on their
- taxes (which won't mean much since they will be in college when they do this).
