- Again I want to encourage our members to dream up proposals for EDUCOM93.
- Below is the beginning of the official call for proposals. If you want the
- entire document, sent email to
- listserv@bitnic and leave the subject line blank. The message should be one
- line:
- get educom93 cfp
- and you'll get the whole thing returned to you.
-
- If you are thinking of submitting a proposal, please keep in touch with
- me so we can coordinate and maximize our efforts. The call specifically
- mentioned adaptive aids and disabled students!

- CRAFTING NEW COMMUNITIES
-
- * What constitutes a community?
- * How is information technology redefining our traditional notions of
- community?
- * How will these new tools help us cope with an increasingly complex
- society?
-
- This year, the EDUCOM conference focuses on the communities of
- tomorrow -- from both social and technological perspectives. As
- leaders in higher education, we have both an opportunity and a
- responsibility to create new definitions of community that can take
- best advantage of leading-edge technologies and bring new levels of
- access and new capabilities to individuals. Networks and adaptive
- technologies make it possible for people to communicate without
- geographic, physical, or temporal restrictions. High-speed processors
- create opportunities for visualization of scientific phenomena in ways
- not previously possible. Large-scale databases and retrieval
- mechanisms enable comparative work in language and literature, in
- humanities and business, in the social sciences. And all of these
- technologies are changing the way we teach, learn, and communicate
- -- changing the communities in which we live and work together.
-
- We invite you to participate actively in the year's most important
- conference on information technology in higher education. Between
- now and January 15, 1993, we are soliciting proposals for
- presentations, discussions, panels, debates, and demonstrations,
- especially those concerned with how the notion of community is
- changing as a result of technology, the impact of these changes, and
- about the specific innovative technologies that are accelerating these
- changes. We have defined the following three major thematic areas:
- * Encompassing Larger Communities
- * Anticipating Change
- * Organizing Support
