  11. I saw this posted on USENET last week. Since my children are homeschooled,
  12. they are not subjected to these kinds of indoctrination and prying but for
  13. those who children are incarcerated in the public school system, this
  14. information can help protect them. I think it can be helpful for home
  15. school parents to know what their children are missing, also.

  17. I posted this on alt.fan.rush-limbaugh last week where it was not particularly
  18. appreciated. Like I mentioned to my sister, when I told her about it, a
  19. parent may not agree with everything in this list but it is better to think
  20. about it ahead of time than after children are affected.

  24.                    THE RIGHTS OF PARENTS AND STUDENTS
  25.              REGARDING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION

  28.           Considering the diversity of curricular matters being
  29.      discussed in both public and private schools today, it is of
  30.      vital importance that parents know their rights and the rights
  31.      of their children under law.  It is equally important that
  32.      parents inform the school authorities, in the institution where
  33.      their child attends, that they desire to have access to and
  34.      opportunity to approve or disapprove of the curricula their
  35.      child will be taught BEFORE the child is subjected to the
  36.      material in class.

  38.           It does not go without saying that much of what is being
  39.      taught as "truth" and "fact" in schools today is directly con-
  40.      trary to measurable scientific thought and Biblical veracity.
  41.  
  42.           The recent upsurge of parents in New York City regarding
  43.      materials of a perverted sexual orientation that were being
  44.      thrust upon their children at the FIRST GRADE LEVEL, is itself
  45.      only the tip of the iceberg.
  46.  
  47.           Educational institutions are not a law unto themselves.
  48.      They are accountable to local school boards, which in turn, are
  49.      accountable to parents and the public-at-large.  Given the overall
  50.      mobility of our society, whether a student in one state is
  51.      correctly taught is and ought to be the concern of the rest of us.
  52.      Thus, New York's problems are ours as well.
  53.  
  54.           The following letter is a model by which you may legally
  55.      inform your school officials of your rightful desires with respect
  56.      to the education of your child.  Read it carefully; then copy and
  57.      submit it to your local school officials.  Be certain that they
  58.      NOT BE ALLOWED TO IGNORE your request for a copy of their "policy
  59.      statement on procedures for parental permission requirements."

  63.                       MODEL HATCH AMENDMENT LETTER

  70.      ____________ school.  Under U.S. legislation and court decision,
  71.      parents have the primary responsibility for their children's
  72.      education, and pupils have certain rights which the schools may
  73.      not deny.

  75.           Parents have the right to be assured that their children's
  76.      beliefs and moral values are not undermined by the schools.
  77.      Pupils have their right to have and to hold their values and moral
  78.      standards without direct or indirect manipulations by the schools
  79.      through the curricula, textbooks, audio-visual materials or
  80.      supplementary assignments.

  82.           Under the Hatch Amendment, I hereby request that my child NOT
  83.      be involved in any school activities or material listed below
  84.      unless I have first reviewed all the relevant materials and have
  85.      given my written consent for their use:

  87.           Psychological and psychiatric treatment that is designed
  88.           to affect behavioral, emotional or attitudinal character-
  89.           istics of an individual or designed to elicit information
  90.           about attitudes, habits, traits, opinions, beliefs or
  91.           feelings of an individual or group;
  92.  
  93.           Values clarification, use of moral dilemmas, discussion of
  94.           religious or moral standards, role-playing or open-ended
  95.           discussions of situations involving moral issues, and sur-
  96.           vival games including life/death decision exercises;
  97.  
  98.           Contrived incidents for self-revelation; sensitivity train-
  99.           ing, group encounter sessions, talk-in, magic circle
  100.           techniques, self-evaluation and auto-criticism; strategies
  101.           designed for self-disclosure including the keeping of a diary
  102.           or a journal or a log book;
  103.  
  104.           Sociograms, sociodrama; psychodrama; blindfolded walks;
  105.           isolation techniques.
  106.  
  107.           Death education, including abortion, euthanasia, suicide, use
  108.           of violence, and discussions of death and dying;
  109.  
  110.           Curricula pertaining to drugs and alcohol;
  111.  
  112.           Nuclear war, nuclear policy and nuclear classroom games;
  113.  
  114.           Globalism, one-world government or anti-nationalistic
  115.           curricula;
  116.  
  117.           Discussion and testing on interpersonal relationships;
  118.           discussions of attitudes towards parents and parenting;
  119.  
  120.           Educating in human sexuality, including pre-marital sex,
  121.           extra-marital sex, contraception, abortion, homosexuality,
  122.           group sex and marriages, prostitution, incest, bestiality,
  123.           masturbation, divorce, population control, and roles of males
  124.           and females; sex behavior and attitudes of student and
  125.           family;
  126.  
  127.           Pornography and any materials containing profanity and/or
  128.           sexual explicitness;
  129.  
  130.           Guided fantasy techniques; hypnotic techniques; imagery and
  131.           suggestology;
  132.  
  133.           Organic evolution, including Darwin's theory;
  134.  
  135.           Discussions of witchcraft, occultism, the supernatural, and
  136.           Eastern mysticism;
  137.  
  138.           Political and/or religious affiliations of student or family;
  139.  
  140.           Income of family;
  141.  
  142.           Non-academic personality tests; questionnaires or personal
  143.           and family life attitudes.
  144.  
  145.           The purpose of this letter is to preserve my child's rights
  146.      under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (The Hatch Amend-
  147.      ment) to the General Education Provision Act, and under its
  148.      regulations as published in the Federal Register of September 6,
  149.      1984, which became effective November 12, 1984.
  150.  
  151.           These regulations provide a procedure for filing complaints
  152.      first at the local level, and then with the U.S. Department of
  153.      Education.  If a voluntary remedy fails, federal funds can be
  154.      withdrawn from those in violation of the law.
  155.  
  156.           I respectfully ask you to send me a substantive response to
  157.      this letter, attaching a copy of your policy statement on
  158.      procedures for parental permission requirements, to notify all my
  159.      child's teachers, and to keep a copy of this letter in my child's
  160.      permanent file.
