- Motorola is involved in producing the silicon for the Echelon system
- (known as "LonWorks"). It was one of the more interesting sessions I
- went to at the Motorola University Symposia back last June. What is
- basically going on is that there will be a microprocessor in every
- controlled device, and they will communicate with each other via the
- power wiring. Since the functions are controlled both with software
- and hardware, you have virtually unlimited choices of things to do.
-
- I was already to jump in and start designing until I found out how
- much the development system cost - oops - plus there is (at least for
- me) always the nagging concern about being locked into a proprietary
- technology, although it would ease my mind considerably if it were to
- be second sourced...things may have moved along since June in these
- matters...I havn't been keeping up.
